Ice baths have become a really popular trend and it's not hard to see why. People use ice baths today for a variety of reasons: from faster recovery after exercising, to improving mood and reducing stress in everyday life.
However, one big question we are often asked is: "How long should you actually sit in an ice bath?"
Start simple - Short sessions at the beginning are a good start
If you're a beginner, it's important not to push yourself too hard from the start, just like when you first start exercising - Jumping into an ice bath for 5 minutes or more can be a shock to the body, and it's not meant to feel like torture! - Instead, start with 2-3 minutes: this is long enough for your body to start adapting to the cold. Then increase gradually: once you feel comfortable, you can increase the time up to 5 minutes.
Remember: it's not a competition. Listen to your body and step out if you feel it's too much.
However, if you are already used to ice baths and want to push yourself a little further, you can sit for up to 7-10 minutes. But here are some things to keep in mind:
Temperature matters: If the water is really cold (below 5°C), stick to shorter times. If it's a bit milder (8-12°C), you can sit in for a bit longer.
Keep moving: Move your arms and legs a little lightly to feel that you are moving.
When should you get out?
There are some signs that say it's time to end the ice bath session:
You start shaking violently: A little shaking is normal, but if you can't stop shaking, it's time to get out.
Skin or lips turn bluish: This is a signal that the body is getting too cold.
You feel dizzy or nauseous: Get out immediately and warm up gently.
After the ice bath - Warm up the right way
Once you get out of the ice bath, it is important to warm up your body gently:
Dry yourself properly: Use a warm and soft towel.
Put on warm clothes: A soft sweater and thick socks are ideal.
Drink something warm: A cup of tea or hot chocolate will do the trick.
My Personal Rule
I always say that less is more when it comes to ice baths. It's better to sit for 3 minutes and feel amazing afterwards, than to sit for 15 minutes and be completely exhausted. Ice bathing should be a positive experience, not a pain in the ass.
So, next time you're thinking about how long to sit in the ice bath, remember: listen to your body, start small and increase gradually. And above all - have fun with it!
